Catching Up!

Ok, kids, so we are just about caught up. This week, remember to do the following:

  • Read p48 before writing your Postlab.
  • The Postlab needs to include your observations that you made in your Data section, as well as the What, Why, How, and Errors that we discussed in class today. Please label those five items in the left margin in your lab notebook next to your Postlab as discussed in class.
  • No Prelab this week (our activity does not require one next week)
  • Quiz over elements and symbols #1-36 next Thursday.

Have a great weekend! jb

What a Day!

Students-

What a day we had yesterday! Thank you for your patience. 🙂

For this week, the homework for 1st period stays the same. Please include your two masses, color changes, and temperature changes in your Postlab. Look up “exothermic” reactions in your book for more information.

For 2nd and 3rd period classes, you will not have a Postlab because you didn’t do the lab. Everything else will stay the same. Write up the new Prelab as outlined in the homework. Bring your test back with you, and be prepared to take the Metric/Lab Quiz.

Enjoy your Labor Day holiday Monday with no labor. jb

Week 3| Homework Due Aug 31

Students-

Great work on Thursday with your first lab!  Here are a few reminders as we look forward to the third class!

  • New homework is posted, due Aug 31.
  • Your Chapter 1 test is posted. You are to use your calculator and brain only. Otherwise, you are cheating.
    • Print the test and answer sheet from the Homework Page.
    • Complete your math work on notebook paper. No work = No credit.
    • Turn in your final answers and notebook paper this Thursday in class.
  • You have your first Postlab (Section VI) to complete this week.  Review the Lab Report Format file first. Be sure to include your important data (your actual numbers), any errors, what happened, and why. Use 3rd person.
    • If you completed Experiment 1.2 in class, write the Postlab for 1.2. Read the top of p.18 in your book for some ideas.
    • If you complete Experiment 1.3 in class, write the Postlab for 1.3. Read p.26 in your book for some ideas.
  • You have the next Prelab to complete this week.  This week’s experiment will come from the linked handout (on the Homework Page- Conservation of Mass Lab). Follow the same steps you did last week to complete the Prelab (Sections I-IV).
  • Quiz this week over metric conversions, lab equipment, and lab safety rules.
  • There will be another quiz Sep 15 over the elements and symbols #1-36 on the periodic table. You need to know the symbol and be able to spell the names of those elements. Print a periodic table for class from the Homework Page to study.

Have a great week! jb

Class this week, Aug 24

Students,

I enjoyed seeing each of you in class last week.  I hope you enjoyed it, too.  If not, there’s only 29 more classes to go! 🙂

Great job on bringing in those signed items and your Homework Assignment Sheets! I think just about all of you have figured out how to access your homework assignments now.  Please don’t hesitate to email or call with questions (before noon on Wednesday if you need a response by Thursday).  Many of the concepts we are covering are new for you… dimensional analysis, significant figures, writing a lab report properly.  The list goes on, so please ask if you need help.

  • Remember there will be a quiz August 31 over the metric conversion flashcards, the lab equipment, and the Lab Safety Contract.
  • For your Prelab report this week, please refer to the Lab Report Format which is linked to the Homework page and your notes from last week! (A Prelab is ONLY sections I-IV.)
  • If you want some more help with Chapter 1, see this video or this one.
  • Remember to bring all of your needed school supplies/tools to class each week.  See here. Email me if you don’t know the password.

I will see you Thursday!  jb

Please bring your printed, completed, and signed Assignment Sheet (Aug 17), the completed Metric Worksheet, and the signed Syllabus and Lab Safety Contract to class with you tomorrow. (And of course, all class supplies and completed homework. I will supply your lab notebook in class tomorrow.)

Parents will want the “Top Five Parent Responsibilities” file either printed or on their phone during the Parent Meeting (3pm tomorrow).

I look forward to seeing you then!

Final Exam|Last Class next week

keep calm chemStudents,

Remember that our last class meeting will be next week (as if you could forget :)) and that you will take your Final Exam in class.  Please bring a calculator (plan to clear any memory) and writing utensil. Periodic tables, paper, and questions will be furnished.  You may bring food to enjoy and share after the exams are all completed.

I plan to have final grades posted to Engrade by May 4. Your exam grades and yearly average will be posted to a separate class called “Chemistry Final Grade_16_17.”

Study hard this week! That’s all the homework you have.

It has truly been a privilege to teach you all.  I know this has been a tough class, but you have worked hard! Thank you for your diligence.  I will see you one last time next week so that you can show demonstrate all that you have learned!

See you then!

Exam Review

no ideaStudents,

Please be sure you have all your old tests in your notebook this week.  We will do our best to find time to review this Thursday before Spring Break.  As a result, if you have extra time over the break to review on your own (or as a group :)), you will have more specific  info to study.

See you in a few days! jb

Welcome back!

Students,

This is just a quick reminder that we meet this week, Jan 5.  Be sure you have your one week of homework completed (including a test, a prelab, and homework problems).  Dress appropriately for lab and bring all your supplies- especially calculator and pen!

See you Thursday! jb
